Au pairs celebrate World Cup games with their families

by Stephanie Rueter

Cultural Care au pair Judith and her host family wave her home country’s flag in honor of the World Cup games.

Au pair Judith Radusch wrote in to tell us about how she has been celebrating the World Cup games with her host family, like au pairs across the country have been doing with their own families. The games have proven to be a great way for families and au pairs to share their cultures and root for each other’s teams. Says Judith:

We are always so excited to watch the World Cup. I got my German flag and my host family and me cheered for Germany. They said “Go Germany, go!” And I taught them some German soccer words like, “schießt ein Tor” (make a goal) or expressions like “gewinnen” (win) and “Gleichstand” (tie).

We also cheered for the U.S. But during the last game they lost and we were all sad. But my family said, “Now can we cheer for Germany!” And at the last game we were so excited and cheered all for Germany! We all felt the pressure and sang “Olé olé” :). It was fun! And then at halftime we skyped with my family at home and they played with their vuvuzela horn. And we had so much fun talking to my brother (8) because he also taught them some German.

My family also enjoyed hearing the soccer song from Shakira: Waka Waka! I have to play it 10 times a day ;). So, we are excited to watch the game tomorrow, Germany vs. Spain! We all hope they will make it and maybe become world champions!
